The other day I was having an exchange with a friend about the current state of our world.
As we spoke about racism in the U.S. she said…
“Some would say you can’t change a system that is working exactly as it was designed to.”
I’ve been thinking about that and the idea of creating radical change ever since.
My first reaction to her comment was one of understanding to some degree. I can certainly see why some people might feel as though change is virtually impossible when we are looking at the current state of affairs around the US and the world. The current “reality” speaks loud and clear and with hundreds of years of history too, it’s often hard to ignore.
My second reaction was a very strong feeling around not wanting to live in a world where that is the reality. Meaning- I don’t want to live in a world where positive change isn’t possible individually OR collectively. In fact, it goes against everything I am and believe in so…nope. Not an option for me.
And while the conversation was one related to systemic racism and oppression in the U.S. specifically, I can’t help but think about how many people must feel that way about change in general.
How many people feel like no matter what they’ve tried to do to change their circumstances, they can’t quite get things to shift?
Try as they might, they falter, fall or feel like they are failing and end up reaching the very same conclusion…change isn’t possible for me.
There are often some pretty intense moments in some of my coaching calls where clients will very powerfully tell me that “This is all there is for me. Can’t you see that?!” and some will follow that statement with a laundry list of the evidence to support their feelings…
Life just doesn’t get to work out like that for me.
I don’t know what to do Lamisha! I’m all out of answers.
It hasn’t happened yet and if it were meant to be, wouldn’t it have happened already?
And you know what I say to just about every person?
I refuse to accept that.
I refuse to accept that we…
–> Can’t change our lives for the better.
–> Can’t transform our life circumstances & situations.
–> We’ve run out of options & that all we have left is to settle.
–> Are indeed stuck in whatever struggle we are currently in.
–> Have no power in changing our own lives individually and collectively.
I simply refuse to accept that reality & my hope is that you do too.
When we begin to accept things as they are and lose all hope of things changing for the better, things can get pretty dark pretty fast. We become complacent, comfortable and numb to what’s unfolding.
The struggle, pain, depression and the like becomes “normal” and despite deep down wanting more, we simply shake our heads and let life take us wherever it takes us.
The way I see it…if you WANT change, it’s possible.
If you DECIDE to change, it’s all but done.
If you COMMIT to change, the evidence speaks for itself.
And when you TRUST change & BELIEVE beyond what you see in front of you…that is when the magic happens.
At the end of the day true change (on both individual and collective levels) boils down to what we accept, expect, trust, believe and how all of that bleeds over into our inspired actions.
So what do you accept?
What do you expect?
What are you trusting & believing in for your life right now?
And what changes are you committed to for the rest of the year and beyond?
If you’re unsure, consider this your unofficial assignment to dig a bit deeper and make changes as you see fit.
You were made for more & it’s about time you believed it.
