One thing you must know about me is that I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to exploring the mindset of successful athletes, actors, musicians, and the like.
Since I’ve started really focusing my work around mindset, I’ve “stumbled” upon a ton of interviews and stories about various celebrities and ordinary (but massively successful and happy) people and how they cultivated a mindset that led them to where they are today. The most recent came when I was watching the pre-game show for the Super Bowl a few weeks ago.
As they interviewed Tom Brady (quarterback for New England Patriots and also 5 time Super Bowl winner) they asked him a really interesting question:
When was the last time you doubted yourself?
While trying to remain humble and still honest he paused before saying something to the effect of:
“It’s been awhile.”
I was struck by his power and belief within himself. Sure, he’s had 5 Super Bowl wins and countless amazing seasons to solidify his belief within himself, but it’s something that really struck me as interesting. It seems as though having unshakeable belief within himself is a non-negotiable.
I suppose when you reach that level in your career, there really is no room for doubt, but it had me thinking…when was the last time I doubted myself?
(If I’m honest, it’s probably last week when I was doubting myself in a situation with my son.)
As I continued to watch the pre-game show, they turned to the Philadelphia Eagles quarter back Nick Foles. What they shared about his story was both inspiring and enlightening, particularly as it applies to mindset.
In his last off season, Nick Foles was thinking of retiring from football altogether, possibly filled with a ton of personal doubt and fear of what was to come. After a trip with is brother in law, he decided to continue his career, at least for a little while.
Little did he know, that decision to continue would change his life forever resulting in an opportunity for him to play a key role in his team’s road to the playoffs when he took over after the regular quarterback was injured. Fast forward to Sunday’s Super Bowl game and well…he won agains all odds.
So, why am I talking about football?
I’m sharing this with you because these two athletes have very different stories, careers, and lives and yet they are both successful in their own rite.
One has built up his mindset in such a way that he doesn’t even allow his mind to dive into doubt while the other beat all odds after he almost walked away.
Mindset is everything, everything, everything and no matter who you are or what you want to do, believing in yourself and trying again (and again and again in some cases) is KEY.
The thing I want you to understand is that we are all human.
Doubt, fear, and frustration creep in from time-to-time and when life happens, it often throws us for a loop.
Sometimes WE are the underdog in our pursuits as “reality” tells us how low our chances are for success, but all of that means NOTHING if/when YOU want it and build up a mindset for success.
–> YOU have the power to change the thing that changes everything else…how you think.
–> YOU get to decide to keep moving forward or to throw in the towel…when you want it bad enough.
–> YOU get to believe in yourself when no one else does…because your soul knows what you were meant for.
I’m not saying it’s always easy.
I am saying that through the ups and downs, ins and outs, highs and lows, and all the emotions in between, when you taste victory —> nothing is sweeter.
And the best part about it is you don’t have to wait until you get “there” to feel that sense of joy, relief and bliss.
When you do the mind work, you will not only FEEL stronger, but you will begin seeing signs, synchronicities, and magic along the way that will remind you to just keep going. Those small wins on your way to the big game are just as sweet and will continue to build your mindset to Level Unshakeable.
So let me ask you this…
When was the last time you doubted yourself?
AND
What did you do about it?
Start looking at your doubt patterns and reverse engineer your mindset practice to nip them in the bud before they begin. You’d be surprised at how quickly you can transform doubt into confidence with a shift of your thoughts.
And whether you resonate more with Tom Brady and his unshakable belief or with Nick Foles who thought of walking away (or somewhere in between), I believe in you and KNOW that you are capable of all that you desire.
Believe me when I say your Super Bowl (or the equivalent) is coming and the speed with which it shows up is determined by how and what you think.
Consider this your CALL TO ACTION.
I KNOW if you are reading this, there is a very powerful message here for you.
