You hear me talk about the importance of committing to your mindset work every single day and how much of a difference it makes in your day-to-day life. And if you’ve ever done it for awhile and then stopped for whatever reason, you know it’s hard to get things going again.
When you fall out of the habit of doing something, it’s a bit more difficult to get back on track.
So, when I am working with a client I am not only stressing the importance of keeping the momentum of the daily habits going, but also the importance of keeping your mindset momentum going on any given day.
What that really means is this…if you’re in the flow and loving how you feel in the moment, you want to do what it takes to keep that momentum going. The more you feel good, the more you find things to feel good about. The better it gets, the better it gets. The more focus on what feels good, the more good comes your way.
However…momentum works regardless of which way your mindset is flowing which means if you’re having a “bad” day (and you haven’t pivoted your thoughts) things can feel like they are going downhill really fast.
In the beginning of my journey into all things mindset, I didn’t really understand the concept of momentum. I very often was feeling the highs and lows every single day and couldn’t figure out how to get things to level out. In some ways I felt like the “good” and “bad” days were out of my control, but if I could ride the wave of a “good” day a bit longer, I knew I would feel better.
Over time, I realized I could control the momentum by controlling my focus and doing the work not just at the beginning of each day, but also throughout the day as needed.
So, if I got a flat tire when I was already running late to an appointment, I had an opportunity to shift how I thought about that moment. I could either allow the negative momentum to carry me away or I could actively choose a different thought.
No matter where you are or what you are dealing with, you always have an opportunity in the moment to choose how you view the situation you are in.
Is it always easy to choose a different thought? Absolutely not!
Do I always remember to do it? Nope.
Shifting your mindset in challenging moments takes practice like anything else. But if you are committed to transforming your life and keeping the positive momentum flowing, it’s necessary.
Here are a few tips to help you with momentum…
• Start with a mindset practice. (If you don’t have one, this is a great way to begin.)
• Meditate more often.
• Move your body more often.
• Focus on the good through a daily gratitude practice.
• Celebrate your wins!
When things aren’t so “good” here are some tips to shift things…
• Stop and reframe the situation. How can this be working for you?
• Remember, everything is always working out for you…always!
• Do some EFT tapping and deep breathing.
• Chat with a supportive friend to help you reframe things
• Focus on getting back to neutral.
• Move your body, meditate, or do something else to shift your focus.
The moral of the story is this…you and only you get to control how you feel and it begins and ends with your mindset. When things feel good, milk it as much as you can and when it doesn’t feel good, shift your focus and allow the positive momentum to pick up again.
This is the work. It’s a simple concept, but isn’t always easy to do and that friends, is why many people choose to get support and accountability. My challenge for you today is to focus a bit on where your momentum is going and course correct as needed.
You can do this!
We all can do this..the question is not can you, but will you?
