Last week, as I was listening to the radio on the way to school drop off for my son, one of our favorite songs came on. As my son is playing air guitar and drumming to the beat in the backseat, one line in the song jumped out at me and has been playing in my head ever since.
“Who do you think you are? Dreaming ’bout being a big star” Thunder by Imagine Dragons
Part of the reason it hit me is because in that moment I was having a “Who do you think you are?!” mindset moment.
You know the kind I’m talking about. The kind where you have massive desires and dreams and your ego tries to pull you back to “reality” where it’s safe and at the same time stifling for that freedom-chaser like you.
At that particular moment, I was still feeling the amazing energy you typically have early in the year where you feel like anything is possible. I was thinking, dreaming, and scheming for some pretty massive things I plan on doing this year (more on that soon) and my ego was really uncomfortable.
The song came on at the perfect time because not only had it highlighted the very belief that could limit me, but it also highlighted the infinite possibilities of what can be.
You see, if you go further into the song, the lyrics say…
“You say you’re basic, you say you’re easy You’re always riding in the back seat Now I’m smiling from the stage while You were clapping in the nose bleeds”
Which in my mind is a perfect confirmation that no matter what anyone says, you can still make it BIG.
If you’ve been around here for awhile, you know I am a BIG believer in signs and synchronicities and I’ve gotten some pretty amazing signs that I’m on the right path the past few weeks. Lots of really exciting things are unfolding so far for 2018 and yet, I still had this moment where I was doubting my potential.
Can I really do it?
Who am I to want this?
Why can’t I just be happy with what is?
Why do I want/need more?
But…despite the fears, worry, and gremlins that were threatening to take over my mind, I still couldn’t shake the desires that have been bubbling up the past few weeks. Try as they might, those gremlins had nothing on the desires within my heart.
Now, I know I’m not alone in this which is why I’m sharing with you.
Too often, I hear women saying the very thing holding them back in their journey is that voice in their head that says …
“Who the hell do you think you are?”
Often followed by all the reasons they should just settle for less than they desire. Surely their lives are “ok” right now, so why push for more? Some go so far as to feel unworthy or incapable of doing the BIG things they’ve set out for themselves. Feeling slightly (or incredibly) selfish, they strive to shrink their desires and simply stay where they are because in some ways it’s easier.
But, you know what’s actually NOT easy?
–> Living a life questioning all the if, ands, or buts about why you didn’t do what you wanted.
–>Living a life of regret while sitting in your rocking chair pondering your should’ve, could’ve, would’ve-s.
–>Living a mediocre life because you were too afraid of what other people might think of you if you truly went for it unapologetically.
I don’t know about you but I want it ALL.
• I want all the love, peace and joy life has to offer.
• I want all the adventures and once in a lifetime experiences that I can collect.
• I want to serve, support, and make a meaningful impact in the world.
• I want to build a legacy with my work and leave the world a better place than I found it.
And you know what…I’ll be damned if I allow some BS belief in my mind about what other people might think of me or the fact that I may fail, stop me from striving for all of the above and more.
If there is anything I’ve learned in this work I am doing it is this…
Who you THINK you are is exactly who you end up becoming.
So, let me ask you this…Who do you THINK you are? Or better yet, who are you committed to becoming?
AND are your daily actions in alignment with that version of yourself you are becoming?
–>Are you taking risks for what you want and stretching yourself to the edge of your comfort zone to create the life you love or are you settling?
–>Are you opening willing to get uncomfortable temporarily in order to expand and evolve, or are you clinging to what is simply because it is comfortable?
–>Are you seeing through your current reality in order to create a bigger, bolder life vision or are you simply reacting to what’s in front of you and getting stuck in a cycle of sameness?
The choice is yours.
Whether you dream of being a rockstar, writer, actor extraordinaire, or you have your sights on being an amazing activist, business owner, or mother—> who you THINK you are holds the key to who you become.
In fact, this article from one of my amazing clients (she gave me permission to share) hits the nail on the head.
YOU are so much more than you appear to be and have the potential to become whomever you choose. It’s all about perspective.
So…who do you think you are?
